The history of the Kaddiska Mu-Stellar Club: Part 2

Friday, October 26th, 2012

It’s been another year and yesterday it was the Catweazle Club’s anniversary again – the legendary Oxford open mic has now been going for over 18 years. I decided to honour the occasion with a continuation of the story I wrote for last year’s anniversary: the history of the Kaddiska Mu-Stellar Club, an open mic on the planet Oxford in the Sopdet binary star system. You don't need a pass to the underpass party

So I’ve now recovered sufficiently from my Edinburgh trip to write a few words and post some photos.

Edinburgh is a wonderful city, and it’s supercharged when the Fringe is on. I ended up playing the Kittens and Häagen-Dazs open mic at Pulp Fiction books, had slots on two days at the variety show Well It’s Woody, for which I got a mention in a review (Seamless cabaret night with a programme to savour …), and also played a fairly impromptu gig at a café (where I was wowed by the spiced Mexican coffee). Kittens, wood and curtains in Edinburgh

Edinburgh free-fringe open mic

So … a few low-key gigs/open mics in Edinburgh … First the inruigingly named Kittens and Häagen-Dazs at Pulp Fiction bookshop on Thurs. Then on Friday an appearance at the Forest Café open mic, followed by a guest slot in ‘Well, It’s Woody’ at Fingers Piano Bar (to complete the wood-based theme of the day).

Looking forward to seeing lots of other great stuff, and catching a glimpse of that castle I visited on what seemed like endless occasions as a kid … well it was that and curtain shops.

I’ll be taking a number of cameras so expect some pics on here soon. In fact, I’ll have the polaroid so there may even be some almost-instant updates.

Oh, yeah, the Moogathon … how did that go?

Moogie & Vincent in Albion Beatnik 02

In case you were wondering, and don’t follow my facebook page, it all passed off smoothly. Except Charlbury festival was postponed due to flooding so it turned out to be 6 gigs in 6 days (2 short). The songwriting workshop on Friday was also postponed but I ended up providing some musical entertainment for the 4 Tenors poetry event at the Turl Street Kitchen. Photographic evidence is available on Flickr.

Next week is the moogathon

Friday, June 8th, 2012

Moogieman will be attempting to play a gig/open mic slot every day next week from Sunday 10 June, accompanied by Vincent Lynch on drums for most of them.

The schedule is:

Sun – Harcourt Open Arms Mic
Mon – George’s Jamboree at the Jam Factory with Vincent Lynch on drums
Tues – James Street Tavern open mic
Weds – Holly Bush, Live and Acoustical – full set with Vincent Lynch

Who were the troubadours, and what about the trobairitz?

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

A monthly celebreation of local songwriters, poets and general ne'er-do-wells

Some of us singer-songwriter types like to liken ourselves to troubadours. Some of us even call ourselves troubadours. This Saturday Moogieman, along with local performers Ric Wade and Roxy Brennan, and the enchanting chanteuse from New York Cal Folger Day will be taking on this designation (or in the case of the female performers, ‘trobairitz’) for James Bell’s monthly night at the Isis Tavern, by Iffley Lock.

But who were the troubadours, and what about the more obscure trobairitz? Since the gig was first advertised I’ve been surprised by how many people were unfamiliar with the term ‘troubadour’, though most were able to guess that trobairitz was the female version. (more…)

Moogieman and Vincent Lynch in Ilford HP5

Moogieman and Vincent Lynch

Unfortunately, the busier I am with gigs and presentations on Skylab (such as the recent Pecha Keucha for Art Is Just A Word at the Oxford Hub) the less time I have for this site and for photography. However, I managed to find time last night to develop a roll of Ilford HP5 400 ASA that’s been sitting on my desk for a few weeks.

Hidden amongst the silver halide particles were some delightful shots from George’s Jamboree of Music, Comedy and Poetry Possibly from January, including a few of Moogieman and Vincent Lynch. (more…)

The Magi and the Interpretation of Dreams

A Christmas story written for the concert at the Isis Tavern on 17 December.

There are three wise-guys: Ego, Id and Superego. It’s the 25th of December, except they don’t call it that but something else expressed in a weird Babylonian base-60 number system. Id is peering through his OWL or overwhelmingly large telescope trying to observe Princess Salome taking a shower in Herod’s palace 800 miles away when he spots a strange star on the horizon.

My origami Christmas tree

origami Christmas Tree design.

I came across this design while doing research for my work Christmas tree competition. We ended up building a white 6-tier version plus trunk topped with a small stellated dodecahedron. The whole thing is about 80 cm high.

I’ve been booked to play a few numbers at the Isis Tavern tomorrow and I was trying to come up with a Christmas-themed song to go with my Fruedian–Yulean semi-prose poem.

While folding one of the tiers I had the idea of writing a song (more…)

The history of the Kaddiska Mu-Stellar Club

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Last Thursday was the 17th anniversary of Oxford’s legendary Catweazle Club. This is a semi-prose poem I wrote specially for the occasion.

There is an open mic.
There is an open mic in Oxford.
The planet Oxford that orbits the Sopdet binary star system in the western arm of the Eesar galaxy.
Today, the Kaddiska Mu-Stellar Club is 17,000 years old and is thought by many to be the longest-running open mic in the local cluster.
Or at least this side of the Chiltern nebula.
