Comet that ‘failed to shine’ lights up Oxford

Here’s some photos of the ISON exhibition I took part in at the end of last year, put on by local artist Mark James. Rather than taking part musically, this was actually the first time I’ve exhibited my photos – a modest display of 12 of my lomographic efforts.

Sad news this weekend: Fuji is discontinuing Provia 400X. The Japanese film manufacturer is also cutting Neopan 400 black and white film from its range.

The news originated from Freestyle Photographic Supplies, who posted up a marketing announcment from Fuji on their Facebook page.

Provia 400X was the only E6 colour reversal film left with an ISO over 100, which made it particularly useful in Lomo cameras such as Holgas and Dianas with limited aperture control. (more…)

Check out some early colour film, isn’t it beautiful?

Friday, February 15th, 2013

This is some of the earliest colour movie footage. It was scanned recently and put on YouTube by Kodak, who created it as a test clip in 1922. That’s 13 years before the first full-length colour feature film, Becky Sharp.

The film was produced using the two-colour Kodakchrome process. (more…)

In The Spotlight - presenting results of the Drawing competition

In The Spotlight - Awkard Actors improv number

In The Spotlight - Lewis Necombe vs Marcel Proust

You may have heard rumours about a monthly variety night at the Albion Beatnik Bookstore in Jericho, run by Moogieman and Lewis Newcombe, where there is not only a mix of spoken word and musical performances but also regular improvised acting slots and even, it is whispered, a drawing competition. You don't need a pass to the underpass party

So I’ve now recovered sufficiently from my Edinburgh trip to write a few words and post some photos.

Edinburgh is a wonderful city, and it’s supercharged when the Fringe is on. I ended up playing the Kittens and Häagen-Dazs open mic at Pulp Fiction books, had slots on two days at the variety show Well It’s Woody, for which I got a mention in a review (Seamless cabaret night with a programme to savour …), and also played a fairly impromptu gig at a café (where I was wowed by the spiced Mexican coffee). Moogieman and Vincent Lynch in Ilford HP5

Moogieman and Vincent Lynch

Unfortunately, the busier I am with gigs and presentations on Skylab (such as the recent Pecha Keucha for Art Is Just A Word at the Oxford Hub) the less time I have for this site and for photography. However, I managed to find time last night to develop a roll of Ilford HP5 400 ASA that’s been sitting on my desk for a few weeks.

Hidden amongst the silver halide particles were some delightful shots from George’s Jamboree of Music, Comedy and Poetry Possibly from January, including a few of Moogieman and Vincent Lynch. (more…)

Alderney adventure: taking off in a Trislander

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

EBX031

One of the more memorable experiences of my recent trip to Alderney was flying there on the 18-seater, three propeller-engined Trislander. The 18 seats include those of the pilot and co-pilot and we all boarded separately through car-type doors along the fuselage.

There’s no aisle so we sat two abreast, right next to the whirring wing-mounted propellers. The Trislander, manufactured by Britten-Norman, is an elongated version of their Islander aircraft. In order to keep the pitch (more…)

Rhiannon Kelly provides flute accompaniment to the flotilla

Saturday’s naval engagement, Flotilla Thrilla 2, passed off without serious incident save some fine performances on and next to the River Cherwell.

As predicted, the weather was gloriously cloudy but rain held off, making it a somewhat drier event than the first waterborne open mic put on by moogieman.

Stuart Wigby kicked off proceedings (more…)
