Moogie News, Sept 2011

At a time when local newspapers are losing circulation faster than a gangrenous limb, here at Moogiemedia we’re leading the fightback with a new monthly publication, Moogie News.

Okay, expect the initial impact to be relatively small. Moogie News is hand written and hand drawn on a single side of A6. We’re not about to be put out of business by this new-fangled hot metal typsetting stuff (which will no doubt turn out to be a flash in the pan).

Elder Stubbs festival 2011

No pics here of Moogieman performing but some photos I took afterwards. Mainly of plants – the festival takes place every year on allotments that are run by Restore, a local mental health charity.

Open mic tour prep – ties and films

Essential equipment for the open mic tour

I can’t decide which films to take? Or ties? Probably a couple of knitted numbers, along with a narrow grey one for versatility. I think I’ll leave the pale sand crocheted one at home — it has attracted a fair amount comment, not all good.

Huck (formerly of Huck and Handsome Fee, now with Tamara and the Martyrs and moonlighting occasionally with The Epstiein, once remarked that it looked like (more…)

Film supplies

Monday, July 4th, 2011

I’ve been spending rather too much on film lately. I seem to be amassing a large stock as, invariably, the film you want to use — depending on, say, weather conditions, indoor/outdoors, desired effect — is not one you have. Or you have one for that occasion but if you use it there’ll be no spare. (more…)

Moogieman - punting song

Moogieman kicks off the evening with a song about punting

Plucky performers defy miserable weather

Although last Friday’s waterborne open mic event was dogged by persistent rain from start to finish, the organisers – aided by the predictions of a friendly meteorologist – had fortunately possesed the foresight to build a shelter using a large tarpaulin in (more…)

Moogieman through a twin lens reflex

Moogieman

First decent pic (of me) taken with a Welta Reflekta that I picked up for £15 on ebay – perhaps because it wasn’t my finger on the shutter release. It was taken at the Catweazle club, Oxford, about a month ago (it can take time to get films developed).

I’m finding it hard to identify and date my particular model Reflekta (earlier versions were called the Reflecta). None of the photos I can find on the internet look quite like it.

For those of you who are interested, it’s a twin lens reflex (TLR), which means it has a taking lens (which focuses the image) and a viewing lens which projects the image onto a screen in the viewfinder. The two lenses are focused in sync, allowing you (more…)

Diana vs Action Sampler

Tried out my latest lomographic acquisition, the Action Sampler, at George’s Jamboree, a high-calibre monthly open mic night hosted by local performance poet George Chopping.

The Action Sampler is a fairly gimmicky multiple image film camera manufactured by Lomography.

It takes four sequential shots over a period of about half a second using four separate lenses that each cover a quarter of the standard 35 mm frame. Shutter speed is around 1/100th of a second and the aperture is fixed (more…)

Ghostly images from Catweazle and Port Mahon

Faceometer at Catweazle 16th anniversary

More lomoghraphy: photosets are now on Flickr of the Catweazle open mic’s 16th anniversary on 21 October and the 5 November gig at the Port Mahon featuring Swindlestock, Rachel Ruscombe-King and Moogieman.

The Port Mahon photos are my first attempt at reverse cross-processing – developing a colour negative film in a colour slide process. This is tricky to get right, tending to result in very low contrast images, as these pictures demonstrate. However, I definitely want to try again as the slightly luminescent colours and bursting lights give a very interesting effect, when things turn out well.

Photos from last month’s Truck OX4 Festival and George’s Jamboree open mic night have now been uploaded to Flickr. They were taken with my Diana Mini using a variety of different films, including my first forray into black and white. (more…)

Lomo moogo

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

Moogieman at Deja VuSo, I’m getting into Lomography, about 20 years after Viennese pioneers invented it (or should that be rediscovered it).

My interest was sparked when a friend showed me his camera and directed me to a page on flickr. I clicked through a stream of photos that are, in conventional terms, largely unexceptional yet I found them strangely compelling. (more…)
