Nightshift cover Dec 2018 - MATM

Oxford music magazine, Nightshift was kind enough to feature the band on the cover of their December issue. There’s also a double-page spread inside, containing an interview with Moogieman and the Masochists talking about the new Doppelganger EP, band politics, and oddball influences.

The cover photo is by Jason Warner of glasshertzzphoto and we think he did a cracking job.

Red Xmas EP review

Saturday, November 25th, 2017

Here’s what Oxford’s indefatigable music magazine, Nightshift, had to say about the forthcoming Moogieman EP.

Anti Christmas songs are now so prevalent that they’re in danger of becoming as clichéd as the tinsel and bauble-spangled hits they’re intended to counter. Still, Moogieman’s hopefully not one to follow the pack, surely. (more…)

You may have heard rumours about a monthly variety night at the Albion Beatnik Bookstore in Jericho, run by Moogieman and Lewis Newcombe, where there is not only a mix of spoken word and musical performances but also regular improvised acting slots and even, it is whispered, a drawing competition. Rhiannon Kelly provides flute accompaniment to the flotilla

Saturday’s naval engagement, Flotilla Thrilla 2, passed off without serious incident save some fine performances on and next to the River Cherwell.

As predicted, the weather was gloriously cloudy but rain held off, making it a somewhat drier event than the first waterborne open mic put on by moogieman.

Stuart Wigby kicked off proceedings (more…)

Flotilla Thrilla: D-day minus 4

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

I’ll take you out on a lazy afternoon.
We’ll fish for trout and I’ll show you my harpoon.
And in my boating blazer on the back of a punt,
I’ll act so lackadaisical I won’t seem such a …

The countdown begins to Flotilla Thrilla 2: the second waterborne open mic extravaganza organised by Moogieman this year.

An introduction to geocaching

International Geocaching logo

I got myself roped into a four hour canoe trip to Abingdon on Sunday and was inadvertently inducted into the secret world of geocaching.

Actually, it’s hardly secret. There are apparently 5 million geocachers worldwide and 1.4 million geocaches listed on the web. They have a website: www.geocaching.com.

But sometimes the best way to keep things hidden is to be as open about them as possible. Or something like that. It was certainly a secret world to me before I met Elephant Guy (not his real name but his geocaching handle – I don’t know if they call them handles but it’s the kind of thing where they would). Finnish glam rock band Wigwam. Image from http://www.polenta.dircon.co.uk/wigwam.html

The best gigs are like detective stories and next Thursday’s at the Bullingdon Arms is no exception.

I’ve been conducting a thorough investigation in order to bring you more info on the other acts. Facts are thinner on the ground than the soles of my well-travelled espadrilles but I can say with some certainty that the evening promises to offer an eclectic mix.

First up, the headliners, Wigwam. Could this really be the Finnish glam rock band formed in 1968, whose debut album ‘Hard ‘n’ Horny’ was described in a 1974 issue (more…)

Moogieman - punting song

Moogieman kicks off the evening with a song about punting

Plucky performers defy miserable weather

Although last Friday’s waterborne open mic event was dogged by persistent rain from start to finish, the organisers – aided by the predictions of a friendly meteorologist – had fortunately possesed the foresight to build a shelter using a large tarpaulin in (more…)

Flotilla Thrilla

Monday, June 13th, 2011

There’s simply nothing better than messing about on boats.
And you can’t get any wetter than by messing about on boats.
With me,
Oh don’t you see.
So come on let’s mess around.
And I promise I won’t let you drown
Just yet.

Possibly the first of its kind, the Flotilla Thrilla is a waterborne open mic-type evening of performance that will take place in punts, on the River Cherwell. (more…)
